As members of the Joplin community for over a decade, we have been assisting in various ways with the Joplin tornado relief efforts, and have been impressed and gratified at the ways other people are helping out as well.
Although the news worldwide is filled with horror stories daily detailing man's inhumanity to man, we have seen proof of something much different in the aftermath of the Joplin disaster.
We have repeatedly seen people opening both their hearts and their wallets, and helping in different ways. That much needed support has been coming from all over the country, and from people of all ages...
We want you all to know about the students of College Hill Elementary School, in Wichita Kansas. These enterprising and civic minded students set up a lemonade stand in front of their school, at E. First and Clifton St. They have so far collected more than $3,100 for Joplin tornado relief, as well as various boxes of school supplies for their fellow students in Joplin.
The lemonade stand was organized as a part of College Hill's summer latchkey program. Check out these terrific photos of the kids "doing their thing" in The Wichita Eagle.
The director of the latchkey program, Karla Stenzel, said "The kids were really pleased, really excited. I figured they'd get tired after a day or two, but they were excited all week, begging to go out there and work some more."
Stenzel, a physical education teacher at College Hill Elementary, said the week-long lemonade stand may become a tradition for the school's latchkey program, raising money for a different charity each summer.
According to the website, KidsHealth.org, children can learn many important things from volunteering and other forms of community service, including:
• A sense of responsibility and commitment
• That one person can make a difference
• The benefits of sacrifice
• Tolerance for others of different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities
• How to fill idle time in a productive and fulfilling way
